
The results of this study provide a means of quantifying the social and economic benefits that would be realised by improving Star Ratings of the Bruce Highway. They shows that by improving the Star Ratings of the Bruce Highway, large reductions in fatal and serious injury crash costs would be achieved.

As part of its periodic assessment of available information and research evidence, iRAP commissioned the ARRB Group to undertake a review of the iRAP risk factors and the impact of wide paved shoulders on crash risk.
The review compared risk factors for each variables used against existing knowledge. This knowledge is based on research over the last 5 years at ARRB, including comprehensive reviews of relevant literature on the safety implications of road design elements, and from reviews of the crash reduction benefit of different road safety treatments in different road environment types.
