An Opportunity to Save Lives in Tanzania

iRAP inspections of high-risk roads in Tanzania are now underway.

iRAP Tanzania is led by the Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads) and the Automobile Association of Tanzania (AAT), and is receiving technical support from the iRAP central office and Félag Íslenskra Bifreidaeigenda (the Icelandic Automobile Association), which has extensive experience in EuroRAP assessments.

The team is currently surveying highways around the country using RAPID – the RAP Inspection Device. RAPID includes a video camera, touch-sensitive laptop and Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna, which enables road infrastructure elements to be easily classified while driving along the roads.

The World Health Organisation reports that 2 595 people killed and 16 308 people injured in road crashes Tanzania during 2007.
