US$540 Million for Safe and Sustainable Transport in Peru

Peru.png

Preventing deaths and injuries is central to a new 5-year, large-scale program of improvements to Peru’s national roads.

The Peruvian Government will invest US$540 million to lift the efficiency and safety of roads that are critical to the nation’s economic competitiveness and fight the effects of the global financial crisis. The investment is supported by the World Bank.

In 2009, with the leadership of the Peru Ministry of Transportation and Communication, Touring and Automobile Club of Peru, World Bank Global Road Safety Facility and the FIA Foundation, iRAP assessed 1 750 km of medium and high-volume roads around the nation. It found that an investment of US$20 million would prevent 3 200 deaths and serious injuries.  The outcomes of this study will be influential in shaping improvements to Peru's highways between 2010 and 2014.
